MSc course module

Embodied Presence

Exploring the necessity of cultivating and maintaining embodied presence in an increasingly disembodied digital world.

Overview

This module-option provides an exploration of embodied presence and what it means to live our human experience in a body. In an increasingly disconnected and disembodied world, true embodied presence is becoming a scarcity. Even in the transpersonal world, a fixation with “up and out” (out of body, psychedelics and a move away from the material) means that the wisdom and grounding of the body is easily lost and the possibility of spiritual bypass very real. In most spiritual traditions, a deep connection with, and examination of, the body (in stillness and movement) is fundamental to the spiritual path.

Synopsis

Embodiment, integration and presence take time, but all of our modern world (including modern spirituality) prefers short cuts and convenience. What is the cost of these “efficiencies”? How do we find the motivation to stay with what might seem “boring” or “effortful” in order to reap the benefits of embodied presence? We will look at the underlying beliefs and assumptions that either lead us towards or away from the cultivation of embodied presence.

In relation to Spiritual Psychology this module option addresses the challenges of how to make space and time for true embodied presence to emerge in a modern context where everything seems to be working against us. It invites students to evaluate spiritual practices (ancient and modern) through the lens of embodiment and reflect critically on sense-making within this lived context. It seeks to explore the paradox of embracing our embodied humanity as part of the path to understanding who we are as spiritual beings.
