PhD research

As the manager of a private centre for ‘talking therapies’ Stephen assists a range of therapists practicing various modalities. Overall, the majority perform exceptional work helping individuals to overcome cognitive and emotional barriers that may hinder a positive life-trajectory. However, despite guiding their own clients through maladaptive thoughts and behavioural patterns, some therapists regularly display poor Emotional Intelligence (regulation & response). When we consider that the therapeutic-relationship, the bond which forms between the therapist and client and is predicated on trust, mutual respect, and a sense of hope, it is the most fundamental component to successful therapeutic outcomes, strengthening Emotional Intelligence in therapists is paramount. Existing research examining Emotional Intelligence within a therapeutic setting has determined its importance to outcomes, although so has Spiritual Intelligence and Critical Thinking, However, these constructs have only been examined in isolation, not collectively. As such, Stephen will seek to develop these constructs in a combined approach and measure their potential impact on therapeutic outcomes. The research question therefore is: Can the development of emotional intelligence, spiritual intelligence, and critical thinking within talking therapists improve outcomes within a therapeutic setting?
