A warm welcome from our Academic Dean

Dear Applicant,

You have arrived at the applications site for Alef Trust’s MSc programme in Consciousness, Spirituality and Transpersonal Psychology. We look forward to receiving your application shortly.

The Alef Trust was established in 2012 to facilitate the delivery of high-quality global education programmes in areas we perceive to be of vital importance for human flourishing. Our programmes are designed not only to meet individuals’ needs for transformative education but also to advance the ways in which we can foster spiritual and holistic values in the cultures of which we are part. Successful applicants will join a growing, worldwide learning community that is highly supportive of its members and encourages greater responsibility for self and the worlds in which we live. The community operates in the context of the profound interconnectedness of all systems—human, technological, ecological, planetary.

Our MSc in Consciousness, Spirituality and Transpersonal Psychology is validated through a partnership with Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) in the UK.

Our relationship with LJMU goes back over 30 years, and it was at LJMU that in the early 1990s I pioneered attendance and online distance learning programmes in Consciousness and Transpersonal Psychology.

Those enquiring about our programmes express a variety of reasons for their interest. These include the relevance of the topics of study to their professional work, the importance of Alef Trust’s educational initiatives in relation to global issues, and the more individual area of psychological and spiritual growth.

If you are thinking of applying to our MSc, please recognise that it is first and foremost academic in orientation. The MSc is for those who can bring a critical approach through which to evaluate ideas in terms of research evidence and other forms of scholarship.

There are many courses elsewhere that are suitable if you wish to follow a more traditional spiritual path. Those lacking academic skills will find the MSc highly challenging.

There is a section on the application form where you are asked to submit a personal statement and a short academic essay. Please read the guidance notes there carefully. The statement and essay give you the opportunity to explain why you have chosen to study our MSc at this point in your life, and how your background equips you to study specifically in an academic environment.

You must appreciate that competition for places on the MSc is high, and the admissions team will examine your personal statement and academic essay carefully in assessing your suitability. I advise you to consider carefully whether this academic programme of study is the right choice for you, and, if you decide that it is, to ensure that you use this section of the application form wisely in giving the admissions team a clear presentation of the reasons for your choice.

By accessing the links on the right-hand side of this page, you will find more information about what studying with us is all about. We look forward to receiving your application. I have no doubt that it will begin an exciting new phase in your personal and professional journey…

Wishing you every success,

Over the past three decades, our faculty has been involved in the emergence of transpersonal perspectives and frameworks worldwide, influencing research, practice and policy-making in diverse professional fields – including education, health, corporate leadership, social change and restorative justice.

Our collaboration with LJMU supports our learning community through excellent resources and facilities, as well as a solid quality assurance process.

Your final degree certificate will be issued by LJMU.

In accordance with the academic, postgraduate status of the MSc, the assessments invite students to develop rigorous scholarship through writing and research, which is enriched with insights from professional development and self-exploration. We encourage this level of student engagement using transformative teaching methods. Through progressive and engaged coursework, students gain essential research skills, self-knowledge and theoretical mastery of the topics covered in the programme, that can be applied in current professional work or to build new career pathways. Upon completion of the programme, students are also encouraged to publish their research (see Consciousness, Spirituality and Transpersonal Psychology journal for published work by Alef Trust graduates).

In addition to content knowledge in the topics covered in the MSc, students also gain skills in critical thinking, reflexive narrative tools for critical self-reflection, group work and collaboration, transpersonal research methods, and the lived relationship between inner development and applications in the ever-changing and increasingly complex world.

A main feature of our online teaching environment is that required webinars are taught live and also recorded, which allows for synchronous involvement in content and lively discussions during the question-and-answer portions of webinars for those in attendance. Webinars are generally scheduled well in advance, and are held on a varied schedule between 9:00-21:00 UK time. Although we cannot commit to accommodate all time zones for all webinars, we hope for students in our global community to have the opportunity for synchronous participation throughout the programme. When live attendance is not possible, recordings of webinars are available almost immediately and can be viewed at a convenient time, making the programme accessible regardless of location in the world. One-to-one and group meetings with personal tutors are scheduled at mutually convenient times.

Modules are 100% online using the online learning management system, Canvas, and taught via multiple methods of instruction that include teaching webinars (often accompanied by PowerPoint presentations), discussion forums (text-based prompted discussions, often between peers), discussion webinars, reflective circles, and practice sessions (which allow for embodied engagement with content). Several of the modules in the MSc programme also include group work, which supports students in collaborative skill building and deeper engagement with each other on a single project.

This academic learning journey is held within a vibrant community, composed of faculty, staff, students and alumni from around the world, which forms the essential core of Alef Trust, and enriches all our programmes. Our holistic and integrative global learning community fosters rigorous scholarship development at the MSc level alongside transformational inner development. Transformative learning methods are utilised in all our modules, which support a deep level of self-inquiry while fostering connection with experiential learning of programme content, research skills, and personal and professional growth.

You will find that we place a large emphasis on developing our learning community.
Our present learning community comes from many diverse professional fields, with students from 40+ countries evolving their practice in personal and professional projects.

We come together with the aim of evolving our shared knowledge base and applying learning to enrich our personal and professional lives.

Successful applicants will become a part of this global community and we look forward to supporting you in your projects and seeing your vision flourish.

By joining the MSc, you are making a three-year commitment to a rigorous academic and experiential programme, designed to challenge your thinking, as well as support your integrative development. An option is available to study the MSc over two years. This option is available only to those who already have an undergraduate degree in psychology or a cognate discipline, and who can demonstrate that they have the necessary time to commit to the increased level of study.

Our programme offers an immersive and intensive learning journey that is designed to stretch you. You can expect to spend approximately 15 hours per week (22 hours on the 2-year programme) studying learning resources, partaking in webinars, communicating in forums, and preparing assignments.

The programme structure ebbs and flows and it should be manageable alongside your other responsibilities. We will provide you with comprehensive schedule information, so you can plan ahead.

Alongside reflecting on the time commitment, you should consider what support and self-care you have in place to enable you to successfully complete the programme.

All students are allocated a personal tutor to assist them on the learning journey, and students are able to benefit from the Alef Trust’s Wellbeing Officer.

Please note that these services do not include personal or professional counselling services.

Applicants pay a non-refundable application fee of £100. The fee for the full Master’s programme for 2026-27 is £13,200. For students on the three-year track, it is payable over 3 years – £4,400 per year.

Please read Goods and Services Tax notice (opens in popup). All application and tuition fees are payable to Alef Trust. Each year’s fees may be paid in two equal instalments, due on September 1 and February 1. Successful applicants are required to pay a non-refundable deposit of £500 within one month of receiving their letter offering them a place on the programme. The deposit will be deducted from the first instalment of fees due in year one. Currently, student loans are available to eligible students through Student Finance England and Wales. Details about your eligibility for a student loan can be found on the Student Finance website. Students resident in Scotland may be eligible—see the Student Awards Agency for Scotland.

Applications for the 2026-27 academic year can be submitted from late March 2026, and we will continue to assess applications received until the middle of August 2026. You are strongly advised to submit your application as soon as possible. We cannot guarantee that places will still be available by mid-August.
