Course Overview
[/az_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][az_column_text]This course provides an overview of what we know and do not know about parapsychological (psi) phenomena, such as so-called extra sensory perception (ESP) and psychokinesis (PK), which seem to challenge common-sense views of time and space. Researchers in the field evaluate phenomena that seem to be indicative of psi as well as those that seem like psi but probably are not.
The course will first clarify the domain of psi research, including observational and experimental approaches, and their relation to alterations of consciousness. We will then summarize the evidence for psi, pointing its strengths and limitations, as well as the limitations of various types of knowledge acquisition. The course will cover contemporary theories in psychology and physics for psi phenomena, and what their implications are for our understanding of the relation between sentience and reality.[/az_column_text][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][az_column_text]At the end of the course you should be able to: a) distinguish scientific evidence, with all its limitations, from mere beliefs and experiences, b) evaluate and discuss the evidence for phenomena considered parapsychological, c) have a good understanding of various methods for the study of parapsychological phenomena, d) be able to independently search, integrate, and evaluate scientific information on the topic, both pro- and anti-psi.[/az_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][az_column_text]

Etzel Cardeña holds the endowed Thorsen Chair in psychology, which has parapsychology in its remit, at Lund University in Sweden, where he directs the Center for Research on Consciousness and Anomalous Psychology (CERCAP). He is the editor of the Journal of Parapsychology. He has a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of California, Davis, where he also did graduate studies in Theatre Directing and was a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford. His work has garnered many awards from professional societies and his areas of research include extraordinary/anomalous experiences, dissociative processes and acute posttraumatic reactions, hypnosis, and the stream of consciousness. He has delivered keynote speeches and workshops in four continents and has more than 300 scientific publications, some of them in the top journals in psychology and psychiatry. His books include Varieties of Anomalous Experience, the two-volumes Altering Consciousness: A Multidisciplinary Perspective, and Parapsychology: A Handbook for the 21st Century.[/az_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][az_divider][az_column_text]
