Open Learning Course

Transpersonal Psychology

Examine the core epistemological and philosophical issues underlying a transpersonal approach to human psychology.

Start date: September 2024. Length of study: 15 weeks. Tuition: £900

Explore major theoretical developments within, and closely related to, transpersonal psychology, and examine in greater detail several conceptual details within the field.

Transpersonal models are inherently cross-disciplinary and often cross-cultural, attempting to arrive at more satisfying models of mind developed through the challenge of creating models that account for not only cognitive and neuroscientific data, but also insights developed by the world’s great spiritual traditions.

At the same time, this more integral approach requires greater critical discernment, so that findings from one discipline, tradition, or culture, are not misappropriated when employed in more integrative contexts. Transpersonal psychology is thus an exercise in developing a critical yet more inclusive psychology that is capable of explaining both mundane and transformative processes of the psyche.

In our postgraduate programmes ‘Transpersonal Psychology’ includes ‘Learning through Integrative Practice,’ an experiential component which allows students to put transpersonal and integral ideas into practice.

In order to develop personal competence in Transpersonal Psychology it is essential that we embody the theory, encountering ideas in direct experience and engaging with different forms of practice. A defining feature of the transpersonal paradigm involves the quest for personal and spiritual development.

Indeed, a dynamic two-way relationship between ‘working on yourself’ and studying scholarly work and research in this area provides congruency and allows for deeper understanding.

Before the course begins you will be provided with a course outline which will list the reading materials, timelines, and any activities required as part of the course.

As an open learning student, you will be sampling the course alongside master’s students. This course features 3 general discussion forums and several live webinars (recorded should you be unable to attend).

Transformative learning methods are utilised in all our modules, which support a deep level of self-inquiry while fostering connection with experiential learning of programme content, research skills, and personal and professional growth.

In addition to extensive course materials, you’ll receive 1-to-1 tuition in our unique collaborative learning environment.
