Our 10-month Psychosynthesis Course provides comprehensive and guided instruction in the theories and methods of Psychosynthesis

Programme overview

This 10-month online course provides you with 19 live online sessions with the faculty who take you through individual and interactive Psychosynthesis exercises to give you a safe but profound experience of the transformative power of this unique psychology. You also have the support of a dedicated mentor in the faculty for 1-1 guidance, and in addition to the 19 live sessions, there are three guest webinars hosted by specialists in the Psychosynthesis community, and a series of recorded informal conversations with Psychosynthesis practitioners around the world.

The entire month of August is taken as a break to allow the consolidation of learning, and each of the 9 month-long modules begins with a 90-minute live session which introduces key concepts and models in Psychosynthesis. You are able to ask questions and discuss the topics raised, and homework is suggested, which includes audio and video material in addition to reading references. Two weeks later the second part of the module is presented in a 90-minute live session which is experiential. Building on the material given in the first session you are taken through one or more exercises, with time for journaling, sharing with others and group discussion.

In addition, you are able to have three 30 minute 1-1 sessions with faculty members that are optional, and which you can take at any time during the course. You can also request more meetings for a small extra fee if you wish.

Upon successful completion of the course you are awarded an Alef Trust Certificate of Completion and are eligible for consideration for entry into the professional training programme of the Institute of Psychosynthesis.

Other courses in Psychosynthesis are usually embedded in professional training programmes which are longer and more costly.

Upon successful completion of the course you will be awarded an Alef Trust Certificate of Completion and will be eligible for consideration for entry into the professional training programme of the Institute of Psychosynthesis.

Regardless of prior experience, this course is designed to be transformational – taking you on a psychospiritual journey of self-discovery to open you to your full potential. If you have already trained as a counsellor or psychotherapist or are a mental health professional, this course will give you a thorough grounding in Psychosynthesis theory and practice, and will enable you to incorporate its perspectives and techniques into your practice. If you trained in Psychosynthesis some time ago, this course will refresh your memory, and help you to reinvigorate your practice.

We have designed this course to have four components:
  • An opportunity for individual mentoring and support
  • An opportunity to hear from Psychosynthesis professionals about the most up-to-date thinking in the field, and the way Psychosynthesis is currently being applied and practiced
  • A comprehensive introduction to Psychosynthesis theory with accompanying lecture notes, source references, bibliographies and suggested homework
  • A series of immersive exercises to give students an experience of the psychospiritual development that Psychosynthesis encourages and nurtures

It has taken a long time to develop this course and a great team both of faculty and at the Alef Trust. We are also delighted that the Institute of Psychosynthesis recognizes our course as sufficient preparation for students who have successfully completed it to enter directly into their professional training. [NB. For enrolment in this you would need to successfully complete an online interview with the Institute at a cost of £50.]

For six months – February to July – you will have two 90-minute Zoom meetings per month: one a fortnight. How much time you spend in between those meetings on any suggested reading and homework is up to you. After these six months, you will have a one-month break in August, which you can use to catch up on homework and reading if you wish, and then the final three modules are taught from September through to November.

Upon successful completion of the course you will be eligible for consideration for entry into the professional training programme of the Institute of Psychosynthesis. This makes this course a good alternative to the Fundamentals of Psychosynthesis course required to be admitted in the professional training programme of the Institute.

IF YOU WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THIS COURSE YOU CAN ATTEND OUR ONE HOUR OPEN HOUSE INFORMATION SESSION. IF YOU WANT A MORE IN-DEPTH EXPERIENCE, YOU CAN JOIN THE HALF-DAY WORKSHOP (3 HOURS). SEE THE SCHEDULE AND REGISTRATION LINKS AT THE TOP OF THIS PAGE.

Curriculum

Accordion Content

In this first module, we dive into the history of Psychosynthesis, how the term has been used and what it means. You learn about its creator Roberto Assagioli, and how the goals of the approach he developed relate to the concepts of Individuation, Self-Realization, and Self-Actualization. You discover how Psychosynthesis fits into the wider story of the development of psychology, including its relationship to psychoanalysis, the analytical psychology of CG Jung, existential psychology, and humanistic and transpersonal psychology. You are offered a selection of audios to listen to and films to watch to deepen your understanding of the evolution of Psychosynthesis, and are given instructions on ways to work with your autobiography, creating a Psychosynthesis Workbook, and on how to incorporate an Evening review into your routine.

In this second module we explore the Psychosynthesis model of the Human psyche, studying each of its components to appreciate the way it can help us understand our thoughts, feelings and behaviours – and our spiritual experiences. We look at how it helps to illuminate and connect our understanding of aspects of ourselves, such as our personal unconscious and its relationship to Jung’s notion of the Collective Unconscious, and at the ways in which we can repress both painful memories and inspiration trying to reach us from spiritual or transpersonal levels of awareness. We look at critiques of the model and at ways in which we can ground our understanding of it in personal experience, and you’ll work with exercises to explore your sense of identity and the regions of consciousness you can access.

In module Three we look at the three stages in the psychospiritual developmental journey proposed by Psychosynthesis, exploring Assagioli’s concept of a personal and spiritual psychosynthesis and critiques of this approach. We go deeply into notions of the Conscious self vs the Higher or Transpersonal Self and the way in which Psychosynthesis proposes a gradually deepening relationship between these two aspects of ours. In addition, we explore the topics of breakdowns, spiritual emergencies and spiritual by-passing, and you’ll learn a key technique used in Psychosynthesis for finding your centre to connect to a free, unattached resource of inspiration and calm.

In this fourth module we look at how Assagioli developed Jung’s model of cognitive functions from four of these functions to seven, exploring the roles not only of sensation, intuition, thought and feeling, but also of imagination, desire and will. We look at how Psychosynthesis explains the conscious self as being related primarily to the two core principles of Love and Will, and at how an understanding of the process of willing can be used to develop and refine your ability to make clear choices in alignment with your values, to develop your ability to act freely and with intention. You will work with exercises to develop your functions and in particular to refine your understanding and application of choice and intentionality.

In the fifth module we look at the importance of differential psychology, appreciating individual differences, looking in particular at the sevenfold typological system developed by Assagioli. We look at each type in turn to see which qualities we might possess and how we can use this typology in personal development, in our relationships and with our clients. We learn how the system proposes that we have both a personality type and a soul type, offering 49 variations. We look at how the system gains nuance through introvert/extravert expressions and five levels of influence, and we are invited to use the typology as a flexible map: to recognise dominant patterns, cultivate underused qualities, and tailor interventions, while keeping the individuality and wholeness of the person central.

In this sixth module we explore how we seem to have a multitude of selves within us, known as subpersonalities in Psychosynthesis and as parts in Internal Family Systems theory. You will get to know your subpersonalities, learn how to dialogue with them, and how to appreciate and fulfil their deepest needs. You will look at their relationship with the Self and its developmental journey, at theories of their origin, and the ways in which different schools of psychology, including IFS, work with them to effect psychological growth and healing. In addition to interactive work in the practicum session, you will be provided with details of 30 different methods you can use to access subpersonalities and work with them.

After a one month break in August, to consolidate our learning and catch up with the recommended reading, we dive into this seventh module: looking at the range of techniques and methods which Psychosynthesis counsellors, psychotherapists and coaches use to help their clients work through personal challenges, to grow and change and fulfil their potential.

We explore how Psychosynthesis is eclectic in its approach, drawing on methods from a wide range of disciplines in psychology, education and also within the field of personal and spiritual approaches to transformation.

Module Eight offers an in-depth exploration of how Psychosynthesis engages with mental health and psychological distress. It examines key debates around concepts such as “psychopathology” and “mental illness,” questioning traditional medical models and highlighting Psychosynthesis’s holistic view of human experience. The module introduces a bio-psycho-social-eco-spiritual framework for understanding mental health, recognising that distress can arise from multiple, interconnected causes. Students explore how Psychosynthesis integrates spiritual and psychological perspectives, seeing symptoms not merely as disorders but as potential expressions of the Self’s growth and transformation. Through theory, case studies, and practical examples, the module demonstrates how this approach can support a wide range of challenges—from depression and anxiety to addiction—while maintaining a compassionate, integrative stance. Ultimately, it invites practitioners to balance awareness of both pathology and potential in guiding clients toward greater wholeness and meaning.

From its inception over a hundred years ago, Psychosynthesis was not meant to be confined solely to the counsellor’s or psychotherapists office, but was designed to also inspire innovation in education, and within any contexts that call out for the development of ‘right relations’ between individuals and groups of people. For this reason, you can find the influence of psychosynthesis in the disciplines of management consultancy, business coaching and life coaching, in addition to finding its presence within the fields of education, mediation and social care. In this module we survey a range of potential applications and focus particularly on the use of Psychosynthesis in coaching and Psychedelic integration.

What You’ll Receive

Accordion Content

In our first session the Alef Trust and the Faculty will introduce themselves and will offer an overview and orientation for the course which is just beginning. You will then be asked to introduce yourself so that you can start to feel part of an engaged learning group of people throughout your time in the course – people from around the world who are just like you: your Psychosynthesis Certificate Community. One simple piece of homework will be offered, to complete before the next meeting.

In each of the nine modules, you will be able to participate in a live one-hour interactive session, in which Psychosynthesis theories and principles will be explained, followed by a discussion with Q&A. The session will be recorded for you to watch any time later.

After each of the teaching sessions, you will have access to comprehensive teaching notes summarizing the points covered in the class, together with references for further reading, and Homework exercises.

Two weeks after the Teaching session you will be able to participate in a live 90-minute interactive Practicum session in which you’ll be guided through one or more Psychosynthesis exercises based on the topic you have covered in the teaching session. You will then have time to record your experiences in your journal and take a comfort break, before being invited to share your experiences one to one with a fellow student. Then you will both rejoin the group to engage in sharing and discussion.

As we cover the nine modules, we will also have three guest webinars delivered by members of the Psychosynthesis community, to introduce you to new ideas and to specialists in their subject areas. Their presentations will include Q&A and time for discussion.

You will have access to a recording of each Webinar so if you miss one or wish to listen to it again you can.

At the beginning of the course you will be put in touch with one of three mentors: Greg, Sacha or Toby. You will be able to arrange at your mutual convenience a time for a 30-minute video or phone call in which you can discuss any aspects of the course, whether theoretical, practical or experiential. These sessions are optional, and the course fee entitles you to three sessions during the ten-month period. You can also request more sessions at a charge of £25 per session, payable directly to the mentor. Your mentor will also be able to help you find a Psychosynthesis counsellor or therapist if at any point you feel this would be helpful.

Frequently asked questions

Accordion Content

Psychosynthesis is a term used to refer to a particular school or orientation in psychology and psychotherapy, but it can also be used to refer to a process of personal and spiritual development inherent within the human being, regardless of whether or not they have encountered the ideas and methods of the approach known as Psychosynthesis. Its perspectives, theories and techniques can be used not only in psychotherapy, but also by individuals for their own personal and spiritual development, by couples and groups for interpersonal development, and in the field of education. It represents one of the first foundational schools of Transpersonal Psychology.

An Italian psychiatrist, Dr Roberto Assagioli, first presented the basic ideas of Psychosynthesis in 1911. He studied the work of both Freud and then Jung, and through the twentieth century he gradually developed Psychosynthesis theory and practice, being at the forefront first of the Humanistic psychology movement and then the Transpersonal movement alongside his colleagues Abraham Maslow and Stanislav Grof.

Psychosynthesis is integrative, eclectic and wholistic, making use of many different techniques drawn from a wide range of psychotherapeutic approaches, whilst also including methods drawn from more broadly educational, spiritual and personal development contexts.

Psychoanalytic and counselling techniques, Gestalt, meditation, guided visualization, artwork, somatic and movement work, all have their place, with therapist Dorothy Firman writing “Psychosynthesis concerns itself first and foremost with a consideration of meaning, purpose and values in the individual‘s life. This defining characteristic of the practice of psychosynthesis points to the whole spectrum of psychotherapeutic inquiry, since the accessing and manifesting of purpose, meaning and values is as likely to take the client back to family of origin issues as it is into transpersonal content areas.”

Psychosynthesis aims to help you in your personal journey of development and integration and in your spiritual life too. By offering an understanding of the Self that is wholistic and inclusive, and by suggesting a variety of ways in which to deepen your self-knowledge, Psychosynthesis helps you and your clients to tap into sources of transpersonal guidance, to find a greater sense of meaning and purpose, and to alleviate feelings of psychological distress or discomfort.
