Blotzer, L. B. (2025). ‘Unconditional acceptance’: Nature connection for women living-with ADHD and AuDHD [Unpublished Master’s thesis]. Alef Trust & Liverpool John Moores University.

Women living-with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and ADHD combined with autism (AuDHD) struggle to live up to societal expectations and experience anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. Research suggests that Nature contact reduces ADHD symptoms in children. Research also suggests time in Nature is restorative, reduces anxiety, and increases general health while individuals with a Nature connection (NC) receive greater well-being benefits. This study used heuristic inquiry to examine the experience and meaning of NC for women living-with ADHD/AuDHD within a societal context. Data from seven co-researchers was collected by semi-structured interviews. Data analysis holistically approached sections of meaning and was finalized through coding. Results are presented as individual depictions of co-researchers, a composite depiction of their combined experience, and a creative synthesis. The composite depiction representing co-researchers’ NC consists of six themes: Therapeutic, Spiritual, Being in Relationship, Safe Space, Natural and Meaningful, and Ecological Awareness and Concern. NC provided co-researchers a space away from societal expectations where they felt supported, accepted, and connected to something larger. Findings suggest the importance of Nature for well-being and the importance of non-judgmental spaces for women living-with ADHD/AuDHD. Protecting natural areas may provide a supportive resource for women living-with ADHD/AuDHD.
