Bowler, D. (2024). Sparks in the dark: A heuristic inquiry into how visual artists use lucid dreams as part of their creative process [Unpublished Master’s thesis]. Alef Trust & Liverpool John Moores University.

Dreams are often credited as the source of innovative and creative ideas, yet research on how specific types of dreams, such as lucid dreams, are utilised by visual artists remains limited. This study aims to explore the use of lucid dreams in the creative processes of visual artists. Employing the qualitative method of heuristic inquiry, a holistic and investigative approach was taken to integrate dreams and artworks. Seven visual artists with experience in lucid dreaming were recruited as co-researchers, participating in semi-structured interviews and contributing artworks related to the theme. The findings suggest that lucid dreams serve as a significant source of inspiration, offering an environment for exploration, experimentation with materials, and experiencing boundless creative possibilities, which subsequently influences their waking life artistic practice. Variations were observed among co-researchers in their preferences for depicting lucid dream elements, ranging from accurate and literal representations to evocations of the dream’s essence and feeling. The study discusses these findings in relation to relevant literature and concludes by considering the value of lucid dreaming for various creative practitioners and its potential to enhance general creativity. Limitations and suggestions for future research, including the therapeutic potential of creating visual art from lucid dreams, are also presented.
