Caracciolo di Melito Falck, G. M. (2025). Exploring depression potential traumatic and/or transformational outcomes: A quantitative study on the correlations between depression centrality, PTSD symptoms, and/or growth domains [Unpublished Master’s thesis]. Alef Trust & Liverpool John Moores University.

This study investigates whether a clinically diagnosed episode of major depressive disorder (MDD) can be experienced as a psychologically significant event associated with symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and/or domains of posttraumatic growth (PTG). A cross-sectional, quantitative design was used. A total of 102 participants completed an online survey including the Centrality of Event Scale CES, the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 PCL-5, and the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory PTGI. The results showed a strong and statistically significant correlation between event centrality and PTSD symptomatology across all symptom clusters. No significant correlation was found neither between event centrality and total PTG scores (except for a weak association with the appreciation of life subscale), nor amongst PTSD and PTG (except for two weak correlations between the PCL-5 subscale of intrusion and the PTGI subscales of appreciation for life and new possibilities). The results offer a preliminary step in the reconceptualization of MDD as a psychologically significant experience which may lead to processes of traumatisation and invite further reflections on the potential mediators and/or moderators of transformation.
