Cawley, M. F. (2025). Women’s journeys of growth: A phenomenological exploration of self-empowerment experiences in perimenopause [Unpublished Master’s thesis]. Alef Trust & Liverpool John Moores University.

Research on self-empowerment in perimenopause suggests a process that is both positive and challenging for women. Little is known, however, about these experiences of growth from the perspective of women who are in perimenopause and who self-identify as being self-empowered in this transition. A transcendental phenomenological design, incorporating in-depth semi-structured interviews, was employed to explore the experiences of self-empowerment in perimenopause among nine self-empowered women. Data were analyzed using Moustakas’ phenomenological process and thematic analysis for shared themes. Findings revealed six textural themes; awakening to health challenges and difficulties, activating the medicine woman within, birthing the inner activist, validating her inner processes and needs, enlivening her path of growth forwards, feeling confident and empowered in her reality on her terms, and four structural themes; ongoing symptoms out of the ordinary, perimenopause experienced as unknown or unreal by the medical system, identifying what no longer aligns or resonates, empowered actions. The composite description suggests a journey of growth coexisting with personal and systemic challenges and difficulties for women, which may have created the impetus for the journey towards self-empowerment during perimenopause. Implications suggest women’s experiences of self-empowerment during this transition can be enhanced when they have access to accurate information on perimenopause and when they actively seek out better outcomes in their lives.
