Kelly, C. (2025). Prep, set and setting. Is this the psychedelic progression we need? What ontological preparation can be derived from the experiences of ayahuasca and DMT facilitators? [Unpublished Master’s thesis]. Alef Trust & Liverpool John Moores University.

This research explores the crucial role of ontological preparation (OP) in facilitating safe and effective psychedelic experiences, particularly those induced by Ayahuasca and DMT. Through in-depth qualitative interviews with experienced psychedelic facilitators, the study identifies OP as indispensable for mitigating risks associated with profound ontological shifts and enhancing the integration of these experiences. Key findings highlight that effective OP involves rigorous screening, personalised interviews, holistic practices, and spiritual and psychoeducation. Innovative tools, such as theatrical demonstrations, help familiarise participants with complex internal landscapes, reducing distress. The research also underscores the importance of intrinsic motivation for positive outcomes. While facilitators strive to minimise priming, the inherent paradox of preparing for experiences that challenge fundamental reality is acknowledged. The study advocates for a hybrid model that integrates traditional wisdom with Western scientific rigour, emphasising the need for comprehensive, ethical preparation protocols to navigate the spiritual and existential dimensions of psychedelic journeys.
