Klimas, D. (2024). Bridge weavers: A grounded theory study into the role of Western psychedelic facilitators in shamanic and ceremonial group settings [Unpublished Master’s thesis]. Alef Trust & Liverpool John Moores University.

This research investigated the role and characteristics of contemporary psychedelic facilitation in shamanic and ceremonial settings within the country of the shaman’s origin. While research interest in psychedelics has increased in recent years, there is a paucity of studies that have focused on the process of facilitation within these environments. To address the gaps, this study employed a comprehensive constructivist grounded theory approach. Semi-structured interviews with eight purposefully chosen, highly skilled facilitators were used to collect the data. The interviews explored the complexities of facilitators’ work and their competencies within shamanic and ceremonial contexts. The study identified several key themes depicting facilitators’ navigation of their roles and responsibilities. This study provides information on today’s psychedelic practitioners’ responsibilities, capabilities, and challenges in non-clinical and non-recreational environments. The aim is to contribute to establishing the guidelines and best practices for safe and effective facilitation within ceremonial and shamanic settings and to expand the view on the importance of the role of these facilitators.
