Kudelka-Thompson, P. (2024). Seeing, feeling, being: Participatory exploration of the plateau experience and its integrative and transformative potential [Unpublished Master’s thesis]. Alef Trust & Liverpool John Moores University.

This dissertation delves into the plateau experience (PLEX), a transcendent state described by the late Abraham Maslow, using a participatory approach in Transpersonal Psychology. The study aims to define and explore the co-creative, relational, embodied, and transformational aspects of the PLEX as reported by individuals who have undergone such transpersonal states. The research uses qualitative methods, including semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis, to identify common themes and characteristics of the PLEX. Core themes include entanglement, intention, witnessing, surrender, connection, aliveness, and transformation. These themes were contextualised within Ferrer’s participatory paradigm. The study finds that the PLEX, distinct from peak experiences and flow states, offers a sustained, serene, and integrative form of consciousness, bridging the boundary between spiritual practice and daily life. The Participatory PLEX Matrix and Model are proposed, illustrating the cyclical nature of transformation and the ongoing evolution of ordinary experiences into a sense of sacred being. The research highlights the potential applications of the PLEX in enhancing personal well-being and facilitating transformation through the integration of the mundane and the sacred. Future research avenues include cross-cultural studies, cognitive and neurophysiological investigations, and the development of practical tools for measuring and facilitating PLEXs in various contexts. This study contributes to the under-researched concept of the PLEX and offers a fresh perspective on integrating transcendent experiences into everyday life.
