Lee, T. H. (2024). Synchronicity in the workplace: A mixed method study of the associations between synchronicity, meaningful work and work engagement [Unpublished Master’s thesis]. Alef Trust & Liverpool John Moores University.

This study examined the associations between work-related synchronistic experiences (WRSEs), meaningful work, and work engagement, and the lived experiences of individuals who have encountered WRSEs, through an explanatory sequential mixed-method design. The quantitative component of the research tested whether WRSEs are positively associated with meaningful work and work engagement, and if meaningful work mediates the relationship between WRSEs and work engagement. Self-report questionnaire data were collected from 108 full-time employees using the Synchronicity Awareness and Meaning-Detecting (SAMD) Scale, the Work and Meaning Inventory (WAMI), and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES). The findings revealed significant positive correlations between WRSEs, meaningful work, and work engagement. Mediation analyses demonstrated that meaningful work significantly mediated the relationship between WRSEs and work engagement. Qualitative data, gathered through semi-structured interviews with seven participants who had high scores on all three of the self-report questionnaires, identified four themes: types of WRSEs, mechanics of WRSEs in work and careers, WRSEs enhancing meaningful work, and WRSEs enhancing work engagement. The integration of the quantitative and qualitative findings underscored the central role of meaningful work in mediating the impact of WRSEs on work engagement. This study highlights the potential of WRSEs to enhance work engagement by fostering meaningful connections, offering significant implications for both employees and employers.
