Ludwick, D. (2025). Eyes of the world: A mixed-methods study comparing the flow states of improvisational musicians with the meditation states of meditators [Unpublished Master’s thesis]. Alef Trust & Liverpool John Moores University.

This study examined the associations between the flow states of experienced improvisational musicians and the meditative states of experienced meditators, specifically in the context of nondual experiences. The study employed an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design. The quantitative portion of the research involved 50 participants and examined the comparison between flow states and meditative states using the Nondual Awareness Dimensional Assessment – Trait (NADA-T). Data analysis revealed that there was a statistically significant difference in the NADA-T scores of musicians and meditators, that experience level, in years, was associated with increased NADA-T scores in meditators specifically, and that there was a statistically significant difference in the scores of musicians who used psychedelics compared to those who did not. Qualitative data, collected through semi-structured interviews with six participants (those with the top three scores in each group), revealed several themes such as dissolution of the ego, feelings of bliss, changes in time and perception, sacredness of the experience, the importance of surrender, and the importance of prior experience when accessing ASCs. This study highlights the potential for harnessing flow states and other ASCs outside the context of regular meditation and using them for healing and therapeutic purposes.
