Marek, A. (2024). Qualitative insights into psychedelic and Near-Death Experiences: Shaping beliefs and relationships with death [Unpublished Master’s thesis]. Alef Trust & Liverpool John Moores University.

This dissertation explores the transformative impact of psychedelic and near-death experiences on beliefs about and relationships with death. Employing a qualitative approach through Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, the study investigates how these profound experiences influence existential and psychological well-being. Key themes identified include the Sense of Oneness, Experience of Ego Dissolution, Encounter with Light, Reassurance of Continuity, and Experience of Love. Participants reported significant reductions or disappearance of fear of death and a deeper understanding of the web life and death as interconnected aspects of a larger continuum. These themes fostered peace, clarity, and acceptance of mortality, promoting a more holistic and connected perspective on existence. The findings suggest the potential therapeutic applications of psychedelic-assisted therapy and other non-psychedelic practices in enhancing end-of-life care. The study bridges the gap between spiritual understandings and scientific investigations, offering valuable insights for integrating these transformative experiences into clinical practices to affect people’s well-being and end-of-life care. Future research should concentrate on exploring the therapeutic applications of these findings in clinical settings, especially in palliative care and talking therapies.
