McKeever, A. P. (2024). A phenomenological study into the role of belief and its effect on treatment as experienced by practitioners in healing practices [Unpublished Master’s thesis]. Alef Trust & Liverpool John Moores University.

This thesis addresses the role of belief as experienced amongst healing practitioners, in themselves, their clients and their healing approach. The methodology used was qualitative through interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). The participants (sample size, n=7) were healing practitioners purposely chosen for this homogeneity of the sample, while their distinct modalities provided idiographic richness (spiritual, physical, psychological, medical, ministry healing, energy healing and shamanism). The findings from the results highlight eight themes. The first three, related to transpersonal values, address the meaning of healing work as greater than career and ego; the scope of treating the person is holistic; healing is about the best unforced outcome. The following four, related to transformative practice focus on: the healing encounter has love as an activating force; practitioners trust their perception or knowing of what is; hypersensitivity is an attributable characteristic of the medium; healers hold space, then, clients accept the invitation to pass a threshold; attribution is important in discerning issues or blocks to treatment. An important limitation was insufficient findings specifically relating to placebo effect and nocebo effect. The transformative nature of this study was highlighted by the emergent transpersonal findings. From these, there is an inherent call for a paradigm shift to seeing the person from a holistic, sacred, or spiritual perspective.
