Norris, C. (2024). The spiritual potential of lucid dreaming as a path for secular seekers [Unpublished Master’s thesis]. Alef Trust & Liverpool John Moores University.

This study explores the potential of lucid dreaming (LD) as a viable spiritual practice within a contemporary, secular context. Traditionally rooted in religious and cultural frameworks such as Tibetan Dream Yoga and Hindu philosophy, lucid dreaming has often been associated with profound spiritual experiences. However, as increasing numbers of individuals identify as spiritual but not religious, this research examines how LD can support personal growth and spiritual development outside institutional traditions.Using heuristic inquiry, the study involved seven experienced lucid dreamers who engage with LD as a spiritual practice. Data was collected through interviews, highlighting themes such as the emotional and spiritual growth facilitated by LD, the role of dream characters as guides and teachers, and the importance of dream settings in fostering transcendental experiences. Participants reported that LD deepened their sense of connection, empathy, and self-awareness, sometimes leading to moments of ego dissolution and non-dual awareness. The findings suggest that lucid dreaming offers a unique and accessible spiritual practice, capable of enhancing spiritual intelligence and integrating spirituality into waking life. This research contributes to the growing understanding of secular spirituality and portrays LD’s transformative potential for those seeking meaning and connection in modern times.
