Smith-Murphy, V. (2025). 78 doorways to self: A grounded theory study into Tarot as a tool for psychospiritual growth [Unpublished Master’s thesis]. Alef Trust & Liverpool John Moores University.

This study seeks to understand how Tarot practitioners experience Tarot as a tool for psychospiritual growth; that is, as a tool to support humans to deepen their understanding of their own psychological landscape, and then to grow beyond the individual ego towards knowing of the ‘divine’. Constructivist Grounded Theory is used as the methodology to understand the processes and experiences that happen within this type of Tarot interventions (rather than Tarot used for fortune telling). The data reveals six core categories, grouped into two triads. The first triad describes the contextual dimensions necessary for Tarot to function meaningfully as more than a deck of cards. The second triad describes the process that unfolds within a specific Tarot intervention, that catalyses psychospiritual growth. The implications of this new theory on our understanding of how Tarot ‘works’ are explored, as well as Tarot’s potential as a technique for transpersonal coaching and therapy. The limitations of the study are discussed, and future directions for research in the rapidly-growing field of Tarot are identified.
