Stevensson, C. A. (2024). Journey into oneness: Comparing the effects of 5-MeO-DMT to awakening experiences [Unpublished Master’s thesis]. Alef Trust & Liverpool John Moores University.

There is a longstanding debate on the subject of psychedelics and mystical experiences. One type of mystical experience, known as an awakening experience, is characterized by an intensified state of awareness, often entailing a sense of interconnectedness, ego dissolution, and a feeling of oneness. Some triggers for an awakening experience include spiritual practice, depression, turmoil, contact with nature. Another trigger is psychedelic substances, including 5-Methoxy-N,N,-Dimethyltryptamine (5-MeO-DMT). The aim of this study was to contribute to the debate of psychedelics and mystical experiences, as well as explore the similarities between the effects of 5-MeO-DMT and an awakening experience. Two groups were recruited, each consisting of five participants. Group A included individuals who have had an awakening experience, while Group B comprised those who have experienced the effects of 5-MeO-DMT. A semi-structured interview with the same eight questions was conducted with both groups. The results showed significant overlap, with participants describing experiences that had many shared themes, such as identity shift, interconnectedness, and positive outcomes. However, the intensity of the experience was more extreme in Group B, and Group A showed greater variation in the duration of their experiences.
