Tanner, C. (2024). Unexpected journeys: A phenomenological exploration of integrating underwhelming psychedelic experiences [Unpublished Master’s thesis]. Alef Trust & Liverpool John Moores University.

This study investigates the underexamined phenomenon of underwhelming psychedelic experiences with psilocybin. While much of the current research highlights transformative and intense experiences, this study focuses on the nuances of journeys that do not meet expectations. Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), semi-structured interviews were conducted with five participants, exploring the lived experiences and integration processes of these less intense journeys. Participants reported high expectations before the psilocybin session, hoping to experience profound transformation, altered reality, and immediate change. During the psilocybin journey, there was a spectrum of experiences, including feelings of underwhelm and an amplification of pre-existing psychological patterns and personality structures. Participants often inwardly blamed themselves, leading to feelings of shame and disappointment, or outwardly blamed the substance for the underwhelming experience. While the experience of unmet expectations was mostly negative, participants also identified some positive aspects from the psilocybin session, such as moments of deep relaxation or increased introspection. After the psilocybin journey, participants reported positive aftereffects, such as enhanced emotional openness and generally feeling better. Participants also had evolving insights and perspectives about the experience and its meaning over time. These findings challenge the traditional focus on profound psychedelic experiences, highlighting that even subtle or underwhelming journeys can contribute significantly to personal growth and self-reflection. This study emphasizes the importance of recognizing the value in all types of psychedelic experiences, broadening the understanding of the diverse effects of psilocybin.
