Touzet, P. (2025). Cultivating the inner ally: Self-compassion and psychospiritual growth in spiritual but not religious adults [Unpublished Master’s thesis]. Alef Trust & Liverpool John Moores University.

This Constructivist Grounded Theory study explores the role of self-compassion in the everyday lives, spiritual practices, and ongoing development of adults identifying as Spiritual But Not Religious (SBNR). It presents self-compassion as central to psychospiritual growth. 10 SBNR adults (5 women, 4 men, 1 non-binary; aged 31–62; diverse origins and spiritual backgrounds) participated in semi-structured interviews. Data collection and analysis were conducted concurrently through a constant-comparative method. Theoretical saturation was ensured through purposive sampling, and memo-writing supported theory. The participants’ stories highlight self-compassion as an ongoing, multifaceted, personal journey fundamental to psychospiritual growth. Findings are presented through six interrelated categories: (1) the SBNR context; (2) internalized barriers to self-compassion; (3) the nonlinear and gradual development of self-compassion; (4) its lived experience and practice; (5) growth outcomes (healing, wholeness, authenticity, surrender, resilience, balanced development, deepened spirituality); and (6) interpersonal dimensions. Overall, self-compassion emerges as central to the SBNR path, empowering individuals to meet life’s challenges, deepen their spiritual connection, and cultivate compassion for others. Integrating self-compassion training into psychotherapy, spiritual teachings, and community practice may support both individual and collective transformation. Future research may refine these findings through focused lenses, cross-cultural perspectives, and complementary methodologies.
