Worsley, D. (2025). A phenomenological study of Pathwork as a means of integrating spiritual awakenings: How do individuals experience the Pathwork method as a means of integrating spiritual awakenings? [Unpublished Master’s thesis]. Alef Trust & Liverpool John Moores University.

This qualitative research explores how individuals experience the Pathwork method as a means of integrating spiritual awakenings. Spiritual awakenings, which are often spontaneous, blissful and disruptive, can initiate transformative psychological shifts. That said, the integration process remains underexplored in both clinical and spiritual literature. Drawing on the frameworks of transpersonal psychology, this research investigates the lived experience of five individuals who engaged with the Pathwork Method as a long-term integration practice. Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted to identify recurring themes across participants’ narratives. Five key themes emerged, Spiritual Awakening and Initiation, Trauma and Integration, Practice and Commitment, Community and Support, and Intuition and Trust. These themes highlighted the complexity of spiritual transformation and the crucial role of ongoing inner work, community support, and embodied practice. The findings support existing theoretical models by figures such as Grof, Jung, Wilber, and Campbell, while also offering modern insights into the integration process. The research shows that spiritual awakening is not a single event, but a deep and often challenging journey that requires sustained engagement. Results are offered for therapeutic practice, spiritual communities, and future research, with a special focus on recognising and supporting psychospiritual crises within modern psychological and cultural contexts.
