Zaher, D. (2024). Inside the awakened heart: Exploring the experience of heart awakening using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis [Unpublished Master’s thesis]. Alef Trust & Liverpool John Moores University.

This research explores the experience of awakening the heart. The heart is a symbol across time and cultures, conveying the qualities of wisdom, intuition and love and that ancient people across the world viewed as the seat of consciousness. Recent research on awakening the heart shows this type of awakening to occur in the chest; for there to be a connection between the heart and a beyond-ego state; for a connection with one’s own deep truths/ intuition to be experienced and for positive affective states to be experienced. This study used Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis to analyse the data from six participants about experiences of an awakened heart. Findings show heart awakening experiences to not be a one-off occurrence, rather, something that endures in the experiencer’s life over time, sometimes decades and brings characteristics of positive affective states; spiritual experiences; transformation; development of emotional awareness and the decision to choose the guidance of one’s own heart over previous forms of guidance. Heart awakenings can be described as a peak experience and an exceptional human experience, where one also experiences post-traumatic growth. Heart awakenings can be described a sub-type of awakening experiences.
