Rainbow Goddess

PhD Student

Biography

Rainbow Goddess is a PhD researcher at Alef Trust and Liverpool John Moores University, exploring the psychological and transpersonal dimensions of matrescence. Her MSc research investigated the meaning of community for spiritual but not religious (SBNR) mothers using heuristic inquiry and creative interpretative methods such as menstrual art and mandala painting. Her findings highlighted the unique challenges of SBNR mothers, who face double marginalisation and often lack spaces that truly support their identity and experiences.

With over 15 years of experience in therapeutic and wellbeing roles, including shamanic healing, transpersonal coaching, and leading workshops and retreats, Rainbow has now dedicated her work to supporting mothers. Having navigated a difficult matrescence journey herself, she weaves community healing, women’s spirituality, storytelling, ancestral connection, and embodied practices such as yoga and sound healing into her initiatives. She also runs The Village, a spiritual mother-and-baby group, and hosts the podcast Motherhood: Rawful but True, challenging cultural myths and advocating for transpersonal matricentric feminism.

PhD research

Rainbow Goddess’s PhD research explores the psychological and transpersonal dimensions of matrescence, the profound transformation of becoming a mother. While matrescence is increasingly recognised, existing frameworks often medicalise maternal emotions, overlooking the deeper identity shifts and meaning-making processes involved. Her research seeks to develop a holistic understanding of matrescence that integrates psychological, spiritual, and sociocultural perspectives.

By drawing on qualitative and participatory methods, this study aims to map the lived experiences of mothers, highlighting both personal and systemic influences on their transition. A key focus is how societal structures support or constrain maternal wellbeing, particularly for those who identify as spiritual but not religious (SBNR).

This research contributes to a growing discourse on maternal development, challenging outdated perspectives and offering new ways to understand and support mothers. Ultimately, it seeks to foster greater recognition of matrescence as a valid and transformative life stage.
