Baraybar, F. (2025). Addressing the epidemic of spiritual abuse: Exploring the discerning power of personalized spirituality as a pathway to communal healing and non-hierarchical spiritual practices [Unpublished Master’s thesis]. Alef Trust & Liverpool John Moores University.

This study explores the lived experience of women who have survived spiritual abuse within contemporary ceremonial and spiritual healing spaces through the lens of existential phenomenology. The research identified seven main themes following (1) the dynamics of power and control in spiritual leadership (2) the lived experience of spiritual and metaphysical transgressions (3) the emotional effects and trauma responses of participants (4) navigating the reconstruction of trust and vulnerability (5) the work of reclaiming personal spiritual authority and self-agency (6) cultivating modes of discernment and fostering community support. This investigation introduces the coined term transpersonal abuse to expand our understanding of the subtle violations occurring through non-ordinary and ontological contexts. This includes sub-themes of psychic coercion, energetic manipulation and astral intimidation. These often invisible violations noted deep somatic wounds and transpersonal fragmentation on the participants. The study underscores the immediate need to expand education around discernment, ethical guidelines for emerging ceremonial spaces and trauma-informed leadership. It also proposes the introduction of personalised spirituality as a form of personal protection and empowerment which may offer survivors an alternative path for the reconstruction of the sacred and the self. Limitations include cultural specificity and sample size, noting the harrowing fear of potential persecution caused by discussion of this topic. The following section outlines potential directions for future research such as neurosomatic mapping of spiritual trauma and cross-cultural inquiry of transpersonal abuse. This work intends to contribute to the expansion and integrated understanding of the contemporary issues surrounding spiritual violations and recovery.
