Caspersen, E. L. (2024). A mixed-method exploration into the experiential aspects and effects of meditation in lucid dreaming [Unpublished Master’s thesis]. Alef Trust & Liverpool John Moores University.

Lucid dreaming is a type of dream in which, while asleep and still in the dream, one realizes they are experiencing a dream and not waking reality. Research exploring lucid dreaming meditation is emerging, including associations with meditation practice frequency and styles, mindfulness and the role of meta-awareness. The present study delved into experiential aspects and effects of meditation in lucid dreams. It employed a two-phase mixed-method sequential explanatory design, a novel method in this field, with experienced lucid dreamers. The research was guided by the following question: How do individuals experience meditation in lucid dreams compared to their experience of meditation during wakefulness? Seventeen participants were recruited from online lucid dreaming communities and completed questionnaires measuring meditation depth and state mindfulness following a three-minute mindful breathing practice in wakefulness and lucid dreaming. Seven participants were interviewed to explore their lucid dream meditation experience. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was used to explore descriptions and meaning of this intimate and fascinating phenomenon. Lucid dream meditation was associated with greater curiosity on the Toronto Mindfulness Scale. Furthermore, a positive relationship was found between curiosity and meditation depth following lucid dreaming meditation. The interview themes include prior beliefs impacting meaning, altered time perceptions, enhanced, non-ordinary and non-dual experiences, positive qualities, distractions, and impacts extending into waking life. Overall, findings suggest that the experience of meditation in lucid dreams differs from wakefulness meditation, with impacts extending into waking life, highlighting the value of mixed-methods research in understanding the unique aspects of lucid dream meditation.
