Chung Charters, E. (2024). A phenomenological study on the lived experiences of individuals who practice Sudarshan Kriya Yoga breathwork [Unpublished Master’s thesis]. Alef Trust & Liverpool John Moores University.

Breathing does not only perform the function of keeping the body alive but plays an important role in promoting our physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. Practising conscious manipulation of breath movement have shown to produce positive effects on the body such as improving sleep quality, reducing stress, increasing the body’s vitality, as well as inducing feelings of calmness and relaxation (Goldman, 2017; Grof & Grof, 2010, Nestor, 2020; Seppala, 2023; Victoria & Caldwell, 2013). SKY Breath is a unique breathing practice involving several types of rhythmic breathing patterns, ranging from slow and calming to rapid and stimulating. Studies have shown that SKY Breath technique could effectively eliminate stress, exhaustion and negative emotions resulting in the mind calm and body energised and relaxed (Agte & Chiplonkar, 2008; Kanchibhotia et al, 2021, 2022; Sharma et al, 2017). This research studied the lived experiences of the individuals who practice SKY Breath. Of the nine participants who took part in this study, all practice SKY Breath on regular basis and did not report any negative experiences with SKY Breath. From understanding the SKY Breath participants’ experiences in this study, it was noted that participants reported the following phenomena: (i) Experience positive feelings; (ii) Increased sense of connection; (iii) Experience cleansing effect; (iv) Emotionally stable; (v) Feeling empowered; (vi) Feeling energised; and (vii) Feeling SKY Breath became part of self. The findings showed that SKY Breath participants viewed that their quality of life as well as their overall wellbeing have improved through practising SKY Breath. The findings also suggested that SKY Breath enables access to the non-ordinary state of consciousness allowing the emergence of unconscious and superconscious materials, which brings positive benefits to the participants
