Eerma, R. (2024). Soul cartography – From maps to compass, an autoethnographic intuitive inquiry into what constitutes a soul [Unpublished Master’s thesis]. Alef Trust & Liverpool John Moores University.

This research explores the concept of the soul, focusing on how it manifests in lived experience and shapes our identity, purpose and transformation. Inspired by the vision of an “Inner Empire” symbolizing harmonious multiplicity within, this study seeks to answer the question: “What do individuals consider to be the key elements that constitute their soul, and how do these elements manifest in life and identity?” Combining intuitive inquiry with autoethnography, the research draws on two datasets: qualitative interviews with spiritually experienced but not religious participants and personal diaries spanning 13 years. The findings reveal the soul as a dynamic attractor-like inner-most essence with five key functions: (1) a context and compass, guiding individuals toward meaning and socio-ecological niche; (2) a catalyst for transformation, inspiring healing and growth through challenges; (3) a source of love and creativity, enabling connection and driving self-expression; (4) a gateway to the mystical and spiritual, enabling experiences of deep and expansive unity; and (5) a reservoir of life-force, imbuing vitality and presence in our life and encounters. These themes offer practical insights for personal growth & integration, therapy, and education. This study illuminates the soul’s relevance in addressing contemporary disconnection and nihilism. It provides an example for researching soul as a lived experience (instead of objective consciousness) and resources for working with people to fostering resilience, direction and authenticity. Finally, this work invites individuals to live their soul’s whispers and transform their lives into unique, passionate and purposeful adventures that resonate deeply with their innermost essence.
