Shields, S. (2025). Attuning through practice: A heuristic inquiry on the experiences and outcomes of kundalini yoga for women diagnosed with ADHD [Unpublished Master’s thesis]. Alef Trust & Liverpool John Moores University.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is often underdiagnosed and misunderstood in women, with conventional treatments frequently overlooking their embodied and spiritual needs. In response, many seek alternative ways to manage symptoms. Kundalini Yoga (KY) integrates somatic and contemplative elements, and emphasises inner transformation, offer distinct benefits for emotional regulation and self-awareness that potentially exceed those of posture-focused yoga. However, its specific impact on women with ADHD remains under-researched. This study used heuristic inquiry to explore the lived experiences and perceived outcomes of KY practice among eight women formally diagnosed with ADHD, all of whom engaged in KY for at least 60 minutes per week over a six-month period. Data was gathered through semi-structured interviews and analysed thematically, guided by the phases and processes of heuristic inquiry. The process yielded individual depictions, exemplary portraits, a composite depiction, and a creative synthesis. Seven themes emerged: potent and unconventional; agency and self-efficacy; embodied pedagogy; spiritual and symbolic meaning-making; belonging and co-regulation; barriers to engagement; and risks and critical engagement. Co-researchers described KY as empowering, enhancing their ability to navigate ADHD-related challenges such as emotional dysregulation, mental fog, and disconnection from the body. While experienced as transformative, the practice also demanded discernment, particularly regarding intensity, vulnerability, suggestibility and the need for trauma-informed support. This study highlights the potential of KY as an adjunctive support for women with ADHD and underscores the value of embodied spiritual practice in cultivating psychological and emotional well-being.
